  • Chicago’s New Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies builds a new home on Michigan Avenue

  • March 15, 2008

Two years after an historic groundbreaking, the Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies occupies a new lofty space on Michigan Avenue.  Peering into Grant Park and beyond to Lake Michigan it rises 10-storeys and holds memorabilia equal to its stature.  With its multi-faceted exterior, it has been referred to as a “sparkling new gem” by Tribune architectural critic Blair Kamin.  Indeed, this lucky city boasts another beautiful building, but it transcends to much more than a visual delight – it broadcasts a warm welcome for those who wish to explore the history, the passion, the perseverance, and the unabashed pride of a people.

Designed by Chicago-based architectural firm, Krueck and Sexton; and architectural acoustics consulting company, Kirkegaard Associates, the $55 million facility sponsors programs that run the gamut of Jewish culture.  In a building which houses a college, a museum, a library, an archive, a 400-seat auditorium and a Grand Ballroom, achieving acoustic quality and superior audio video systems design throughout was paramount.  Kirkegaard’s role in this endeavor included room acoustics, noise and vibration control and audio/video systems design.

A true test of the waters began on opening night with a successful “part cabaret, part literary” storytelling presentation.  Future events, such as exhibitions, film showings, lectures, musical presentations, and educational activities dot an extensive calendar which will provide something for everyone who chooses to visit this magnificent structure.

Kirkegaard’s project team was led by Senior Consultant for room acoustics, Polyana Frangetto.  Additional team members included Senior Consultants Louie Sunga for architectural integration; Richard Laidman for audio/video systems design; and Terry Tyson who held responsibility for noise control.
