Description

Kirkegaard Associates provided Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with room acoustics, mechanical noise, sound isolation, and infra-structure audio/video systems design for this new state-of-the-art experimental media facility. Commonly referred to by its acronym EMPAC, the Center is anchored into a sloping hilltop overlooking the Hudson River. This dynamic venue features a 1,200-seat performance hall; a 400-seat theatre; two studios providing interactive presentations and productions; and several multi-function media suites. One of a kind worldwide, this facility offers cutting-edge technologies in the exploration of the arts, science, virtual reality and research, all under one roof. Of the many unique features that were designed specifically for EMPAC, one of the most unique and innovative was the concert hall canopy. Designed by KA to reflect high-frequency sound while remaining transparent to mid- and low-frequency sound, it is made of fabric panels engineered, tested, and woven specifically for EMPAC. The knowledge gained from EMPAC is already influencing the design of future performance venues around the world.
