Cyprus Performing Arts Centre awarded to acoustics consultants Kirkegaard Associates

 
 

Cypriot ruinsChicago, August 2007: The Cyprus Cultural Foundation recently announced that London-based British architectural firm Hopkins Architects has been selected to design a new performing arts center in its capital city of Nicosia. Chosen from sixty (60) entries from sixteen (16) countries, Hopkins Architects will be joined by Chicago-based acoustics consulting firm Kirkegaard Associates. Other design team members are local Cypriot architects Virdas and Patsalosavis; New York-based theatre consultants, Auerbach Pollock Friedlander; and International consulting engineers, Ove Arup and Partners.

Rock of AphroditeThe new Cultural Center will consist of a 1,400-seat multi-purpose hall; a 500-seat recital hall; and a 2,000-seatoutdoor amphitheatre. All of the venues will be designed to showcase national and international performances of music; in particular, symphonic and chamber music, opera, musical theatre, and dance. The Centre will be located beyond the old city walls, close to the Parliament and the Presidential Palace in an area that has been designated as a major cultural zone and main tourist destination within the city.

The Island of Cyprus is located off the Southern coast of Turkey in the Mediterranean Sea and covers an area of approximately three thousand square miles.

The project team for Kirkegaard Associates will be led by Larry Kirkegaard, President and Principal Acoustician; Connie Walker, Senior Consultant/Project Manager; Anthony Shou and Tim Gulsrud, Senior Consultants/Room Acoustics; Jonathan Darling and Richard Laidman, Senior Consultants/Audio/Video Systems Design; and Senior Consultant Terry Tyson, Noise and Vibration Control.
