Joseph Myers has designed a significant number of the firm’s major projects. This deep experience with performing arts, academic, and worship facilities forms the foundation of his work. An active singer and actor, Joseph also brings a performer’s perspective to his projects. He draws on his background in architectural engineering to develop practical, buildable solutions, working in respectful collaboration with the architect, theater consultant, and engineers. He particularly enjoys interacting with clients to translate their needs and desires into clear acoustic goals, and to translate those goals into a beautiful, functional, and affordable facility.
Joseph also lectures on acoustic design, presenting to a variety of academic and professional institutions including the Acoustical Society of America and the United States Institute of Theatre Technology.
Which artist inspires you and why?
I have a soft spot for the music of Joseph Haydn, and I’ve always been impressed by his ability to write so consistently – great quantity at consistent quality – while maintaining a playfulness, inventiveness, and grace.
What excites you about working in the architecture and engineering industry?
I love the way a really good architect can create a space that invokes an emotional reaction – especially if that emotional reaction is to expel the breath I didn’t know I was holding, and to feel a sense of peace wash across me.
What is one of your favorite performing arts spaces?
I think the Metropolitan Opera is really impressive, especially given its size.
