Originally designed as a multipurpose space with tunable acoustics, 2,325-seat Southam Hall has proven acceptable for opera, but difficult for instrumental music. The reverberation time falls short of desired levels in both strength and duration. Kirkegaard guided the design of the enhancement system by Acoustic Control Systems, which uses approximately 12 microphones and 50 loudspeakers to electronically generate acoustic reflections that enhance the reverberation. The installation also includes a module which greatly improves communication among members of the orchestra by adding to the support provided by the existing orchestra shell.

Recommendations for improvement of symphonic acoustics in the 2,325-seat Southam Hall, including the installation of a reverberation enhancement system.
