The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach’s Town Center is the heart of an innovative urban development business district. It has helped defined the new downtown by the addition of a first-rate cultural arts attraction for Virginia Beach and the entire Hampton Roads area.

For more than a decade, The Sandler Center for the Performing Arts has offered residencies to some of most innovative and groundbreaking performing arts organizations, including Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Symphonicity, Virginia Arts Festival, Ballet Virginia International, Virginia Musical Theatre, Virginia Beach Chorale, while also accommodating diverse-type touring groups.

The main space in the facility is a 1,300 seat multi-purpose proscenium theater. It’s acoustic enclosure is provided by 12-inch grout-filled CMU structural walls and concrete slab to create an environment free of disturbance from exterior noise and from activities in other rooms. The massive walls and ceiling provide a warm, full frequency response.

Wool serge acoustic banners and heavy velour curtains can vary the reverberation from 1.8 seconds to 1.4 seconds at mid-frequencies. The 32-foot high by 55-foot wide proscenium provides the required opening to fully integrate the on-stage volume enclosed by the orchestra shell with the audience chamber.
The Miller Studio Theatre is a 2,400 square foot rehearsal room that is equipped for smaller performances. Structural discontinuity between the Studio and the rest of the building allows the simultaneous use of the Studio and the main theater.

The Sandler Center has been recognized with an Award for Design Excellence by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the AIA.
