Damaged by an electrical fire in 2003, the newly restored Gozo’s Teatru Astra sprang into life just in time for the October 2005 Festival Mediterranea. Built in the 1960s, the theatre now boasts new backstage facilities, a modified stage and ceiling, and a new sound system. Owned by the “La Stella” Philharmonic Society, and in collaboration with the Basilica of St. George, this stunning venue is host to a wide vista of cultural activities, popular operas and spine-tingling arias. Joining a dedicated team of designers, Kirkegaard lent its expertise to maintaining the historical integrity of the space while ensuring spectacular acoustics for the 1,400-seat theatre and its patrons.
