The purpose of the project was a major expansion to an old aging facility that was in heavy use by the University. The project consisted of a 87,000 square-foot addition to including full-size indoor football sized turf room that can be divided with an overhead curtain. The new indoor field gives the marching band the option to rehearse indoors or outdoors and includes observation towers that allows drum majors and band faculty to better evaluate the visual elements of the shows. The new addition also includes offices, restrooms, a conference room, and a viewing room overlooking the turf room. The project was completed on a very short-term schedule with design taking only 3 months and the entire project finished in one year and it was the first University of Iowa project completed through a design-build process.
