Kirkegaard designed the acoustics of a 1,500-seat concert hall for the Xalapa Symphony Orchestra, the oldest continuous orchestra in Mexico, comprised of 100 musicians from across the globe. This new home for the orchestra is located on the campus of the University of Veracruz in the city of Xalapa, MX and includes the concert hall as well as rehearsal and administrative facilities. The design includes a single-sloped seating area, surrounded by massive sculptured concrete walls, and a combination of local sound-diffusive stones and sound-reflective wood. The roof is supported by a dramatic steel structure, holding a glass canopy. The striking sculptural wall that surrounds the upper volume of the hall is designed by Japanese sculptor Hiroyuki Okumura.
